A weekly drama group for people who have direct experience of homelessness.
SAVVY first worked with Crisis Skylight Croydon in 2018, providing the opportunity for homeless people to attend their Christmas production of Robin Hood: Missing In Action at Braithwaite Hall.
In 2019 an official partnership started with a 12 month project designed to engage homeless people in the performing arts. Funded by Arts Council England, the new Crisis Averted Company took part in weekly drama workshops and performance opportunities, with the chance to see productions at Fairfield Halls, work with other SAVVY groups, and gain the confidence and skills needed to increase their chances of getting back into work and ending their homelessness.
Their inaugural show was an original piece entitled “Back In 5 Minutes” performed in full-face Mask at the official opening of the SAVVY Studio.
Their next production, an original show entitled "The Seance", explored themes of what it's like to be invisible and what lengths people will go to, to be heard. It was cancelled due to Covid-19, however the group moved to Zoom, turned the play into a podcast before participating in the Theatre Centre's ImagiNation Festival.
The group's next show will be with our SAVVY Adult and Young Companies, performing in our upcoming Socially Distanced Steampunk Panto: Jack & The Beanstalk.
Our theatre company has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic but we want to continue our work with our most vulnerable members.
You can contribute today from as little as £5 – it only takes a minute. Thank you.
