PAST PROJECTS

Here's some of what we've been getting up to ...

Whispers In The Library

7pm, Tuesday 1st June 2010

FOR ALL THE FAMILY - Bring your favourite book and come join us at Sutton library for an evening of stories, led by SAVVY Theatre’s Artistic Director and a cast of community actors in a play developed especially for Sutton's IMAGINE Festival of Participatory Arts.

It Must Be Love

SAVVY once again spent the summer working with the ALL STARS drama group (for adults with learning disabilities) to create a unique showcase performance.

Starting with music, the group brought in their favourite songs - we listened to them, discussed how they made us feel and explored the images that came up. From there the scenarios started to take shape.

With movement styles from the 1930’s to the 1970’s disco era and with emotions from the thrill of falling in love to the despair of being dumped this show was devised by the group and performed at the Croydon Clocktower on Wednesday, 15th July 2009.

What Use Is ANY Generation?

After the success of "Landing On The Moon" SAVVY Theatre Company proudly presented their latest community production.

Bringing together a cast of teenagers, older people and everyone in-between, WHAT USE IS ‘ANY’ GENERATION? explored the perceptions, prejudices and experiences each generation had of the other. Using theatre styles such as clowning, music, mask and film, this production provided a memorable experience for all.

Members of the cast also performed highlights of the show at Guilfest09.

ICARUS was devised by the Croydon Young People's Theatre and directed by Sheree Vickers.

Throughout the summer term 2008, the group examined different texts, physical theatre styles, stage combat and used improvisation, movement and Mask to help explore and develop their own unique interpretation of the ancient story of ICARUS – the boy who flew too close to the sun.

"For Icarus, these cautions went in one ear and out the other. Who could remember to be careful when he was to fly for the first time?"

When the group began the process of devising this piece, 13 young people had lost their lives on London streets to knife crime. We decided to keep a close eye on the news to see how many more had died by the time of the performances...

Outdoor Summer Storytelling Event
On the 20th July 2008, members from the SAVVY Young Company supported the All Stars Drama Group on a very special promenade performance at the AWS Leisure Gardens, a community allotments in Croydon.
This project wa
s in conjunction with CROYDON CONTACTS - a charity providing leisure activities for people with learning disabilities.

THE GIANT PUPPET PROJECT
On Sunday, 8th June 2008, members from the ALL STARS drama group (for adults with learning disabilities), supported by SAVVY Young Company members, began working with Di Jones, a visual artist from EMERGENCY EXIT ARTS on the creation of a giant puppet.

At the end of the 6 weeks, the project was completed and the puppet developed by the group then formed a vital part of their OUTDOOR SUMMER STORIES event, held on Sunday, 20th July at the AWS Leisure Gardens in Croydon (see above).

Landing On The Moon

To coincide with the official launch of the company, SAVVY prepared an inter-generational performance piece set during WWII with a combined cast of teenagers and older people. Many of the older members of the cast were evacuated during this time and the project used script, improvisation and filmed memories of all those involved.
