In 2005 SAVVY Community Projects began with a series of inclusive workshops bringing together people aged from 2 to over 70 years of age!

CURRENT PROJECTS

Here's some of what we're up to right now ...

  The Golden Door
by David Ashton

SAVVY Theatre’s Young Company is looking to work with up to 15 local teenagers on a production of THE GOLDEN DOOR by David Ashton.
This show is a dark mythical tale with themes of loss, betrayal, friendship and bravery. This is a unique opportunity to act with a professional company on an extraordinary project exploring theatrical skills such as music-making, puppetry, stage combat and physical theatre.

This project is open to everyone aged 12-16years of age.
No prior experience is necessary, although enthusiasm and commitment are essential.

Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday afternoons at the Secombe Theatre, Sutton and all prospective cast members will be asked to attend at least one ‘taster’ workshop in September.

This project will also give those cast members wishing to pursue their interest in drama further, the opportunity to join the SAVVY Young Company from January 2009.

The performance will take place on Saturday, 29th November at the Charles Cryer Theatre.
The cost for participating is £20.00, payable on acceptance into the project.

** Just Announced **

In preparation for their performance, participants will also be seeing the West End production of STOMP during the Autumn term and negotiations are currently underway to give those involved the opportunity to have a follow-up workshop with the cast.

SAVVY has been working with the CROYDON WAREHOUSE THEATRE on their 'Theatre4Kidz' programme, providing drama workshops for 4-8year olds. Past workshops have included ANIMAL MASK MAKING, STORYTELLING and DRAMA ROLE-PLAY.

PAST PROJECTS

Here's what we've been up to recently ...

ICARUS was devised by the Croydon Young People's Theatre and directed by Sheree Vickers.

Throughout the summer term 2008, the group examined different texts, physical theatre styles, stage combat and used improvisation, movement and Mask to help explore and develop their own unique interpretation of the ancient story of ICARUS – the boy who flew too close to the sun.

"For Icarus, these cautions went in one ear and out the other. Who could remember to be careful when he was to fly for the first time?"

When the group began the process of devising this piece, 13 young people had lost their lives on London streets to knife crime. We decided to keep a close eye on the news to see how many more had died by the time of the performances...

Outdoor Summer Storytelling Event
On the 20th July 2008, members from the SAVVY Young Company supported the All Stars Drama Group on a very special promenade performance at the AWS Leisure Gardens, a community allotments in Croydon.
This project wa
s in conjunction with CROYDON CONTACTS - a charity providing leisure activities for people with learning disabilities.

THE GIANT PUPPET PROJECT
On the Sunday, 8th June 2008, members from the ALL STARS drama group (for adults with learning disabilities), supported by SAVVY Young Company members, began working with Di Jones, a visual artist from EMERGENCY EXIT ARTS on the creation of a giant puppet.

At the end of the 6 weeks, the project was completed and the puppet developed by the group then formed a vital part of their OUTDOOR SUMMER STORIES event, held on Sunday, 20th July at the AWS Leisure Gardens in Croydon (see above).

A Trio Of Tales
Directed by Sheree Vickers

Part of Sutton's IMAGINE Festival of Participatory Arts 2008.

The evening contained the following performances:

THE GHOST OF JERRY BUNDLER
by W.W.Jacobs & Charles Rock
An encore performance of this play as showcased by the SAVVY Young Company at the 2008 Leatherhead Drama Festival.

THE MONDAY MORNING RIOTS
by Nathan Hughes
The first official production by SAVVY’s Adult Company.

LANDING ON THE MOON
A devised piece, compiled from cast experiences, written and shaped by Sheree Vickers (see below).

Landing On The Moon
A SAVVY Community Theatre project that not only reunited some of the cast of “2nd From Last In The Sack Race” but gave young and old the chance to take part in workshops to devise a short one act play. This play was then performed by those involved in the rehearsal workshops.

To coincide with the official launch of the company, SAVVY prepared an inter-generational performance piece set during WWII with a combined cast of teenagers and older people. Many of the older members of the cast were evacuated during this time and the project used script, improvisation and filmed memories of all those involved.
